Significant 75% DVT relative risk reduction in abdominal surgery

Study 1: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 204 patients undergoing general surgery, patients were randomized to receive FRAGMIN 2500 international units (IU) subcutaneous (SC) or placebo with the preoperative medication prior to surgery, then continued postoperatively for 5 to 10 days.
Primary outcome assessment was fibrinogen uptake leg scanning.
Efficacy confirmed in additional studies1
- Study 2: During the 1-week treatment period, the incidence of VTE was 3.9% for FRAGMIN vs 4.0% for heparin (P=0.74)*
- Study 3: The incidence of VTE was 9.3% for FRAGMIN 5000 IU SC daily vs 15.1% for FRAGMIN 2500 IU SC daily in patients undergoing abdominal surgery for malignancy (P=0.001)†
*
This study was a multicenter, double-blind,
randomized trial in 391 patients: 195 received FRAGMIN 2500 IU SC
2 hours before surgery, then every morning for the next 7 postoperative days, and 196 received heparin 5000 IU SC
2 hours before
surgery, then every 12 hours for the next 7 postoperative days.
†
This was a double-blind, randomized study of 1375 patients to determine the incidence of proximal and distal DVT and PE, in which 679 patients received FRAGMIN 5000 IU SC and 696 patients received FRAGMIN 2500 IU SC daily for 6 to 8 days.
